Sprint Planning Meetings – Agile Coach
A Sprint Planning Meeting is a time-boxed event in the Scrum framework that occurs at the beginning of a sprint. The purpose of the meeting is to plan the work the team will complete during the upcoming sprint. During the meeting, the team, led by the Scrum Master and the Product Owner, will review the items in the product backlog that the team plans to deliver during the sprint. The team will then select the highest-priority items from the backlog and create a sprint backlog, a list of tasks that must be completed to deliver the selected items.
The team will also establish the Sprint Goal, a clear statement of what the team is working towards during the sprint. The team will then create a plan for completing the work, and the Scrum Master will help the section identify potential obstacles that may prevent the unit from delivering the work.
The meeting is time-boxed, meaning it should not exceed a specific time limit, usually 8 hours for a one-month sprint. The outcome of this meeting is a sprint backlog and a sprint goal. The team must have a shared understanding of what is expected to be delivered in the sprint, and for every team member to commit to the sprint goal.
This video covers how to run a successful sprint planning meeting. Learn the sprint goals, prioritization, and velocity with the Atlassian Agile Coach.
The team prioritizes actions based on what’s necessary to meet the sprint goal. They use data points, like the team’s average velocity, to help with prioritization. Watch our video to learn what “velocity” is.
Once you set a sprint goal and determine a starting velocity, you can plan the sprint. This is when everyone walks through the stories suggested for the sprint and discusses the work required to complete each.
