Agile Coach Toolkit #1: 5 Whys
The 5 Whys technique is a problem-solving method used to identify the root cause of an issue. Initially developed by Sakichi Toyoda and used by the Toyota Motor Corporation in its manufacturing methodologies, it can be used by Agile coaches for root cause analysis during sprint retrospectives and to identify impediments. The technique involves asking “Why?” up to five times to get beyond habitual thinking and distinguish causes from symptoms. By identifying the root cause, action items for improvement can be created, an accountable person can be identified, and the expected time frame for implementation can be agreed upon. An example of using the 5 Whys technique to identify the root cause of poor Sprint Planning is provided.
