The History of Food Delivery
The history of food delivery is fascinating, tracing back to the 1785 milk delivery services and evolving into the modern version we know today. The first recorded food delivery was made in Italy in 1889 when King Umberto I and Queen Margherita of Savoy had pizza delivered to them. At the same time, in India, men called Dabbawalas were providing lunch to busy workers in the city. These delivery men still operate today and have inspired many in the food delivery industry. Kin-Chu Cafe in LA was the first Chinese restaurant to deliver food in 1922. The invention of the TV led people to stay home, causing restaurants to adapt and create takeout and delivery options. The food delivery industry changed in the 1990s when the first online delivery service, PizzaNet, was started by Pizza Hut. The first food delivery service, WorldWideWaiter, was started in 1995 and took online orders and deliveries for over 60 restaurants. Since then, food delivery apps such as DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Skip The Dishes have grown immensely, delivering virtually any dish you can think of. Food delivery has become an essential service and continues to grow as people value the convenience of having food delivered right to their doorstep.
