LinkedIn, now at 1B users, turns on OpenAI-powered reading and writing tools.

LinkedIn, the professional networking platform, is set to cross the 1 billion user mark this month. The company has unveiled its latest advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), introducing AI tools that offer personalized content digests for users and assist them in creating content on the platform. Initially, these tools will be available to Premium (paying) users in three specific areas:

  1. Enhancing the user feed.
  2. Digesting linked articles and assisting users in crafting intelligent comments on shared articles.
  3. Improving the job-hunting experience, especially in interactions between recruiters and candidates.

Gyanda Sachdeva, VP of product management at LinkedIn, mentioned that the company would assess the usage of these AI tools to determine their broader rollout. The AI features, powered by OpenAI, will utilize OpenAI’s Large Language Models and GPT-4, combined with LinkedIn’s proprietary data, to produce AI outputs tailored to individual users. This means that when two different users view the same article on LinkedIn and use the AI tool, they will receive personalized summaries based on their professional profiles and activities on the platform.

Despite introducing these AI tools, LinkedIn has also been making layoffs, particularly in areas like R&D and engineering. The company’s move towards AI seems part of a broader strategy to streamline operations and remain relevant in the evolving tech landscape.
